Girls Scouts Set Sail on the Harbor Islands

Bring your Girl Scout troop to Spectacle Island on July 13 for day of outdoor exploration! Enjoy a self-guided day of hiking, junior ranger programming, kite-making, marine life touch tanks, and swimming (DCR lifeguard on duty). Spectacle Island will be hosting live music, kite flying, face painting, and games from 1-3 PM. Troops are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunches and swimming gear. Please note, the park maintains a “carry in, carry out” trash policy; there is no trash disposal in the park.

Reserve your discounted ferry passes to Spectacle Island by Friday, June 21. GSEMA has received a limited number of tickets for Girl Scouts and registered adult volunteers. One ticket per person. Family members may purchase tickets at bostonharborcruises.com. Ferries depart from Long Wharf. Further details will be provided upon registration.

Did you know that razor clams can rapidly burrow deep into the sand when they sense predators? Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts will learn about the fascinating lives of animals of the seashore while discovering the new treasures of animal shells that have washed up from the sea. Learn ways to help keep the area beautiful and safe for wildlife and people while fulfilling some of the requirements of the Brownie and Junior Eco Friend badge.

Revere Beach Reservation is accessible by MBTA, and it is recommended that participants use the bridge to cross over Ocean Avenue. Please meet at the sidewalk adjacent to Revere Beach and across the street from the MBTA Wonderland Station on the blue line. Parking is available in the garage at 1300 North Shore Rd, Revere, MA 02151.

What critters live in tide pools? Explore the rocky shore and meet animals in a touch tank at a marine science laboratory housed in a WWII military bunker. Learn about food webs, how waves and ocean currents shape the coast, and how marine debris impacts ocean life, all while helping to clean up the beach. Daisies receive a patch. All others earn the Oceanography badge. Volunteer* supervision required.

Volunteer Training

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. This course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional peer, social, and self-help care.  

 

This course is valued at $170 by Mental Health First Aid USA. Thanks to support from the council, GSEMA volunteers may attend for $75.
