Small Craft Safety Certification is the current Safety-Wise requirement for a canoe trip leader. Learn the skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and respond to canoe emergencies, and gain the knowledge to assist a troop in planning and implementing a canoe outing. This certification covers flat water canoeing, and is valid for a three-year period. Please note that this is a safety and rescue certification course, not a canoeing skills class. Participants must be experienced canoeists who are prepared to pass a prerequisite canoe skills test, which will be given approximately one week prior to the class. Participants who are unable to pass the prerequisite test will be unable to attend the training. (Healthy Living & Creativity, Outdoor Awareness & Environment)

Bring: Your favorite paddle and an adult-sized life jacket if you have one. There are a limited number of adult-sized life jackets and paddles at camp, comfortable layered clothing and/or swimsuit, change of dry clothes/shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, pen/notebook, bottled water

Prerequisite: In order to complete the pretest, you will need to demonstrate the following: • Float or tread water for 1 minute without a life jacket. • Swim any stroke for 25 yards without a life jacket. • Swim any stroke for 25 yards while wearing a life jacket. • Safely launch and control a canoe using the proper strokes while paddling forward and backward, turning, stopping and holding position. Paddling will be done solo, either alone in the canoe or with a non-paddling partner to help balance the canoe. When paddling forward and backward, steering strokes, such as J-strokes or sweep strokes, must be used to maintain a straight line course without switching sides or ruddering.

There is an additional $15 certification fee for this class, which includes the required book and the certification.

Hit the mark as you learn archery safety, skills and teaching techniques to prepare you to lead archery programs for girls and adults. Completion of this training certifies you as a National Archery Association Level 1 Basics Instructor (certification good for three years). Training includes skill development, classroom instruction and assessment (written test and teaching demonstration). (Outdoor Awareness & Environment)

Bring: Water bottle and wear comfortable clothing, layered if necessary (some prefer long sleeves), tie back for hair, comfortable chair.

There is an additional $30 certification fee for this class, which includes the required book and the certification.

If you are currently small craft safety certified and interested in renewing your certification, you may take the class in challenge format and be exempt from the classroom portion of the class. Participants must be experienced canoeists and must still pass a prerequisite canoe skills test, which will be given approximately one week prior to the class. Participants who are unable to pass the prerequisite test will be unable to attend the renewal challenge. This certification covers flat water canoeing, and is valid for a three-year period. After Small Craft Safety Certification, you may take the Moving Water Module for certification to take girls paddling on rivers with Class I and Class II rapids. Training covers river safety and hazards, supervision of paddlers on moving water, and moving water rescues. Certification is valid for three years. Bring: Red Cross Small Craft Safety book and current certification card. Also bring your favorite paddle and an adult-sized life jacket if you have one, comfortable layered clothing and/or swimsuit/wet suit, change of dry clothes/shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, safety cord for glasses, if necessary, bottled water, snacks. Bag lunch provided.

Prerequisite: To qualify for this class, you must have taken the Small Craft (Canoe) Safety Certification class during the same summer (or at the conference). Note: This class meets at an offsite location on Sunday morning. Participants must provide their own transportation. This class may be cancelled due to low water levels on the St. Croix River. Directions to the training site will be sent prior to the conference.
